Shannon Briggs Fight is Off After Failed Drug Test

It seems that all I do is speak about athletes failing drug tests these days, but it is what it is.  As I pointed out the end of Randy Gregory’s career a few weeks back, today I’m reporting that Shannon Briggs will most likely never fight again.

In news out of Hollywood, Florida, the big man himself, a guy I’ve grown up admiring, Shannon Briggs, lost a chance at fighting once again due to a failed drug test.  The drug he tested positive for wasn’t really a drug, more so it was he had high levels of testosterone.  This is akin to what bodybuilders do when they bulk up, and it’s very common among athletes who need more stamina and energy.

He can request a “B SAMPLE,” but the fight is off, so it’s sort of a moot point now.  He held a 60-6-1 record over the years and was on a nine bout winning streak since he lost way back in 2010 to Vitali Klitschko for the WBC title.  He was one of the more popular fighters of his time and was quite the character.  We’ll certainly hope he gets another chance, but it’s doubtful at this point.

Jabrill Peppers Tests Positive for Diluted Urine Sample – NFL Stock Plummets

I’m a huge fan of sports.  MMA is one of my favorite spectator sports, but like most of America, I keep my eyes on the NFL.  The National Football League is a HUGE business, and I don’t just mean for television rights and and endorsements, as it also comes with huge player salaries.  Player salaries are paid based on contracts negotiated between agents and teams, but the attitude and pedigree of each player has a lot to do with what the team is willing to be on the hook for salary wise today, and into the future.

Today, I learned that one of the most amazing college players to watch, Jabrill Peppers, tested positive for a dilute sample at the NFL scouting combine.  This was first reported by Adam Schefter, the amazing reporter from the sports network ESPN.  Peppers is a versatile talent who can play multiple positions, including both offense and defense, and he was expected to be picked pretty high in this years 2017 NFL Draft.

However, this dilute sample is a major hit on his body of work.  He’s the second prospect to have this happen, as it also happened to a linebacker from Alabama named Reuben Foster.

While it’s being reported that Peppers drank eight to 10 bottles of water prior to his test, he was the first player to run for the defensive players.  He drank so much water because he has a history of cramping.  He also was reportedly ill from making the trip from San Diego to Indianapolis.

While there is no fair and true evidence that he indeed used some sort of synthetic urine or other device to dilute his sample, I think this leaves a huge question mark behind him.  I want him to excel, as he’s a great player.  He shouldn’t be penalized for this by teams on draft day because there is zero proof that he did anything to taint his test.

He is currently projected to go at #15 according to a recent mock draft I read.  This means a huge multi million dollar contract.

So what do you all think?  Will we get a report later that he was hiding marijuana evidence, or is he clear?  Maybe he knew how long marijuana remains in the human urine and did something about it.

No, I don’t think so.  There are millions of dollars on the line, why even risk it?

Banned Performance Enhancing Drugs

Performance enhancing drugs or PEDs, for short, are banned in all competitive sports, from college football matches to the Olympic Games themselves. Professional athletes are rigorously tested for banned substances, with some sports being more closely monitored than others; in some sports, athletes don’t just have to give samples after competing, but could be asked to give a sample at any time during the year and can even be punished simply for not being where they are supposed to be when a sample is required.

Unfortunately, the abuse of banned substances and medical procedures throughout sporting history means it is essential that athletes are monitored closely. Not only is it illegal to use PEDs but it also runs counter to the spirit of sporting competition; the idea that people train for years to become as good as they can be, before pitting themselves against other talented athletes.

In addition, many of these banned substances can actually be harmful to your health, and there are recorded instances of athletes, including some top cyclists, dying during and after competition because of the strain put on their bodies by performance enhancing drugs.

The WADA List of Banned Drugs

WADA, the World Anti-Doping Authority, is responsible for compiling and maintaining the list of banned PEDs. They also have ultimate responsibility for testing athletes and for making decisions about whether individuals should be banned from competition and for how long for their doping infringements.

Substances on WADA’s list are either banned completely — meaning that an athlete cannot even use them during training — and those that are only banned during competition. Those banned completely include PEDs such as anabolic steroids and Human Growth Hormone (hGH).

Also banned are diuretics — drugs which make you urinate a lot — not because they give a competitor any advantage, but because they can be used to get rid of the evidence that an individual has been taking a banned performance enhancing drug.

As well as PEDs, there are also banned procedures on WADA’s list, such as blood doping which involves the transfusion of oxygenated blood back into the body to improve performance. Naturally, it is also forbidden to tamper with any samples provided by an athlete, either manually or chemically.

Substances Banned During Competition

WADA’s list also includes substances banned during competition, but which do not give an athlete any advantage if taken during training. However, some individual sports have their own rules regarding some of these substances, and when their use will result in a ban.

Drugs which are banned in competition include recreational drugs such as cocaine and cannabis, as well as PEDs like amphetamines but which are found in many over-the-counter cold remedies.

Believe it or not, even coffee made this list at one time.

Caffeine was, for some time, on the WADA list of substances banned during competition as it is a powerful stimulant, but its use is now simply “monitored.”

If further evidence comes to light of its benefit as a performance enhancing drug, then it could easily find itself back on the list of banned substances.

Side Effects of Banned Substances

Athletes who use the performance enhancing drugs on WADA’s list are not just risking their career; they are also putting their health at risk.

Blood doping, which was thought to be widespread in professional road cycling at one point, can lead to thickening of the blood, and eventually heart attacks. This banned procedure has been implicated in the deaths of more than one athlete in the past.

Human Growth Hormone, which is used to increase muscle mass in athletes and to aid in their recovery from injury, has also been linked to cardiac problems, as well as diabetes, impotence, osteoporosis and arthritis.

These are high prices to pay in order to gain a slight advantage over your fellow competitors, especially given the likelihood that you will be caught cheating either immediately after competing or in years to come as scientific advances make testing of past samples more accurate.

Drug testing is now widespread in most sports, with competitors called to give urine samples immediately after competing. Testing urine samples will help WADA experts identify most banned performance enhancing drugs, but some can only be found by also taking blood samples too.

Professional athletes will give many such samples throughout their career, information which will be added to their WADA biological passport. This biological profile helps testers to identify any anomalies, proving that there really is nowhere for athletes using banned performance enhancing drugs to hide.

Mark Hunt Files Lawsuit Against UFC

Mark Hunt, a Heavyweight contender in the UFC, is taking the UFC to court!  The suit is filed against Brock Lesnar, as well as UFC boss Dana White.

Mark Hunt Lawsuit

Filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for Nevada, the suit alleges racketeering, breach of contract, as well as fraud.

#WHOA

He’s seeking:

  • Compensatory damages
  • Declaratory Relief
  • Punitive Damages
  • Statutory Treble Damages
  • Attorney’s Fees

UFC Fighter Mark Hunt Sues UFC, Dana White

This all comes from the UFC 200 fight where Hunt and Lesnar fought.  Lesnar tested positive for clomiphene and 4-Hydroxyclomiphene after the fight, which are both banned substances.  The test was done prior to the fight and another test was taken, and failed, the night of the bought last July.

Lesnar came back from retirement for this MMA fight and as a returning fighter was subject to the anti doping policy UFC maintains.  He was supposed to have four months of drug tests prior to making a return, but there was a clause of an exemption that read:

in exceptional circumstances or where the strict application of that rule would be manifestly unfair to an athlete

As you can probably assume, Lesnar got the exemption but after the fact tested positive for the two aforementioned banned substances.

Lesnar was initially handed down a one year suspension and a fine of $250,000 (his purse was $2,500,000) and his win was negated against Hunt.  This was decided by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.  However, Hunt is viciously looking for more justice.

I’ve never been one to understand legal jargon, but from what I read Hunt alleges that there was a conspiracy with Lesnar (and the UFC).

Hunt was clean, and Lesnar Doped.  It’s as simple as that, and that’s why Hunt is so pissed off.

The shots fired at Dana White allege that there was a financial motive of almost $360 million to make the UFC 200 event the landmark event.  Of course, a doping scandal would hurt this event and ruin the hype.

In a totally unrelated news story, the UFC sold only days after the event for nearly $4 billion dollars.  Coincidence?  I think not.

You can bet your ass I’ll cover this story as it develops.

Why Lolo Jones Documented Her Drug Test

A three time Olympic athlete named Lolo Jones spoke with this website about her recent drug test documenting.  Long time readers of my website know that I LOVE reading about anything to do with the drug testing space, and more than loving to read them, I truly enjoy coming back to the old pen and paper and putting my spin on it and giving my readers my take on the events that transpired.

In the article, she spoke of signing a petition with other athletes from numerous sports.  This petition made “WADA” independant of any other sports agency, and this was to avoid a conflict of interest when it comes to drug testing for Olympic athletes.

This isn’t the first time she’s had a run in with drug testing.  A popular social media tirade about getting tested on the night of her birthday went viral.  Here are some of the tweets from that night.

Lolo Jones Gets Drug Test on Her Birthday

Lolo Jone is great.  She one time changed her Mom’s cell phone name in her records to say “Ryan Braun.”  (The MLB player who was suspended for 65 games for failing drug tests, even though he maintained he was totally clean.”  She had “Braun” call her repeatedly throughout the time of her drug tests, which is not only clever, but also hysterical.

I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of Jones.  I know I’ll be following her more closely on Social Media after this update.

Happy Holidays, everyone.  Stay clean!

Unauthorized UFC Steroids for Sale

I had to chuckle when I saw this article today.

There are many times I see things in the media that just make me shake my head.  This was one of them.

When people just straight up steal someone’s name and logo, it’s fighting words. I’ve been around long enough to know intellectual property is a serious thing.  I don’t care if it’s a small brand or some large operation, IP law is one of the most difficult in the world to navigate, and people will go to great lengths to defend their IP.

UFC Pharma Selling Steroid Like Products

UFC Pharma Products

These are NOT affiliated with the UFC.

As you know I keep tabs on drugs and the UFC.  I’ll link out to some articles after today’s reaction and you can read them at your leisure.  Today, I’ll touch on the article I read and talk about how some bozo’s ended up making supplements that go by “UFC PHARMA” and are obviously catching ire.

The UFC logos are being used on these products and they caught the attention of the USADA, which added warnings saying that the substances are banned.

There is a short list put out by the USADA that talks of high risk products and diet supplementation products to help people (mostly athletes in high competition / demand sports) avoid using the products that are banned.

Word to the wise:  when you see something that has “Beast, Andro, Lean,” or another word like that – RUN.  It’s either a scam or just some souped up cocktail that could be bad for you.

Most of the products on this “UFC PHARMA” site uses abbreviations for the most common types of steroids.

Examples include:

Halo 10 = halotestin

Tren A 100 = trenbolone

I’ve seen many companies use tricky suggestive marketing to do this exact thing when selling products for bodybuilding, but never have I seen anyone use the UFC’s name.

When will the UFC get involved?

Clearly, they can NOT be happy about this.  I’ll keep you posted and let you know if the UFC takes any action here.  Stay tuned!

Jon Jones Lawyer Claims Supplement Was Contaminated

So Jon “Bones” Jones, the big MMA fighter who has been no stranger to controversy, just stirred up the pot again.

The lawyer for Jones stated on this website report that the supplement he was taking was contaminated.

Jon Jones Lawyer Pops Off About Supplement Being Contaminated

The UFC and the light heavyweight champ of the world have had at it in recent memory.  I talked about it on this page a few weeks back when Tito Ortiz called him out.  I also talked about drugs and how that pertains to Chael Sonnen.  It’s been one heck of a time trying to keep up with all the UFC and MMA news that has to do with drugs!

If you recall, Jones tested positive for banned substances prior to UFC 200 this last July.  He also has said that he’ll be back soon (insert terminator voice here).  Well, the reason he’s saying he was suspended for a banned test is based on the fact that he took a generic form of the erection pill Cialis.  That’s why the 29 year old fighter came under scrutiny initially.

So will he be exonerated?

Well, it’s hard to say.  He’s been a dominant force in the UFC and one of it’s stars.  It’s hard to think that they won’t want him back.  Howard Jacobs, his lawyer, says that independent tests that were USADA (US anti doping agency) administered on the products he took came back positive.  The entire crop, in fact, was marked “Contaminated.”

I think that’s enough to eradicate the suspension and get him into the ring.  What do you all think?

I wonder if one of these products would have cleared the drug test in the first place?

I don’t really recommend products unless I personally use them and beat a test with them.  While these work for cocaine testing, marijuana, and more, I’m not sure if they will beat a generic form of Cialis, but let me get back to you on that one!

Lastly – why is he taking Cialis?  LOL

WWE Suspends Paige for 60 Days

Who here grew up watching WWF?

I for one, did.  Today, it’s called the WWE, but it’s still the same old Vinny Mac running the show and the same old entertaining stuff.

For those of you who don’t know who Vinny Mac is, it’s billionaire founder Vince McMahon, who is pretty much a legend in my book.  I don’t know anyone who has been so inspirational for such a “fake” sport and something that is scripted.  Okay, enough about my back story, let’s get into why I’m writing about drug abuse once again.

WWE Diva Paige Suspended 60 Days

A wrestler named Paige is being the talk of the media lately since she was handed a 60 day ban for a violation of the corporate policy.  The “diva,” whose real name is Saraya-Jade Bevis, says that the drug test she failed was due to a prescription medication that she had provided to the company.

However, this is a case where her employer clearly disagrees.

“Saraya-Jade Bevis tested positive for an illegal substance, not a prescription drug,” WWE’s statement to The Post read. “In addition, WWE is providing world-class medical care for her in-ring injury.”

Paige WWE

Paige and her father had suggested she had provided a prescription for the drug she tested positive for. The WWE thinks differently.

This statement also goes on to discredit her father, who was a wrestler himself under the name of Ricky Legend.

“ok here we go again yes i know about my daughters suspension once again she has not failed drug tests,” he wrote. “My daughter has had a long term neck injury which imo has not be dealt with. i would have ask my daughter to return to UK For help with this injury as help and direction in the USA Has not been forthcoming imo. She has been in pain and out of in ring action for a fair while now and has been prescribed pain killers which apparently is against the wellness program.”

“Same shit, different day,” Paige wrote on  her Twitter account last Monday.  She went on to write “Kids….please don’t get prescriptions or doctors notes.  Not acceptable.”

She has been banned previously by the company.  One more ban would give her a termination.

She is a two time Divas Champion (that’s the women’s division for those of you who aren’t into it like I am) and a native of the UK.  She’s held both championship belts at the same time, and is the only person to have done that in women’s wrestling.

The UK native is a two-time Divas Champion and was the inaugural NXT Women’s Champion in the WWE’s developmental branch. Paige is the only person to have held both championship belts at the same time.

Olympic Athlete Kisses Coked Up Woman And Fails Drug Test

This is one of those stories that would pass as “news of the bizarre.” Although I write with a lot of humor in my site updates, this one is one of the funniest things I’ve ever come across, and honestly, I’m reeling in laughter after digesting the content of the article my friend sent me. The original publication in on this page. Today, you’ll get my first hand reaction.  This isn’t a cocaine drug bust, this is a true “feel good story.”

Canadian Olympic Athlete Tests Positive for Woman’s Cocaine After Kissing Her

Yep, you read that sub headline right.  It’s not a joke, people.

Shawnacy Barber is a world champ at pole vaulting, and he was allowed to legally participate in the Olympic games after a positive test for cocaine.  An arbitrator made a ruling that the coke was ingested by accident.

Say what?

Yep, that is 100% true.  Listen to this story!

The 22 year old, who hails from Canada, had a pretty bad Olympic games.  He finished tenth.  He was ruled that he would not be suspended after testing positive for cocaine (or worse, get a four year ban) only two days before the games took place, but the news of this just started making it’s rounds, which is when my friend sent me the story.

Look, if you want to pass a drug test, just visit my home page. I tell you exactly how to do it.  In fact, here’s an article on how to pass a drug test for cocaine.  Okay, shameless plug inserted, let’s continue.

So this is where I absolutely love this story.

The man said he went to Craigslist, where he was obviously horny.  He solicited sex the night before trials.  He had a “disease free woman” come over to help him relax.  What he didn’t know is that the woman was doing blow before getting to his hotel room and then once again hit up the white stuff in his bathroom.

When Barber was ruled that he ingested the coke in this manner, it was ruled as unintentional.  It’s worth noting that he did decline booze offered by the woman, which is a power move in my mind.  Why booze up before the games?  Just get laid or get a blow job, and call it a day.

This guy clearly fucks!

Tito Ortiz Speaks Out on Jon Jones Failed Drug Tests

Tito Ortiz was one of the original MMA legends.  A can’t miss guy with bleach blonde hair and a huge frame, he’s definitely one of the most recognizable names the sport has ever produced.

When he talks, he has a presence about him.  Recently, in this article, he spoke about what a failed drug test meant to the career of Jon “Bones” Jones.

Tito Ortiz Says Jon Jones “Will Never” Be Greatest of All Time

If you read into it, he’s got a lot of merit in making that statement.  The same things are said about MLB legends like Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez.  The home run kings that crushed the ball out of the ballpark it seemed almost every time they got an at bat.  These men were banned from the sports insider circles because of their steroid use.

Along the same lines of thinking, Ortiz is suggesting that Jones should not be in consideration for “GOAT” (greatest of all time) as far as the world of MMA is concerned.

Jones was pulled from the biggest MMA event in the UFC, the PPV that was UFC 200.  He tested positive for PED’s (performance enhancing drugs.)  In specific, he was flagged for Hydroxy-clomiphene, which is an anti-estrogrenic agent.  He also was found to have Letrozole, which is an aromatase inhibitor.

Even though Jones is no doubt heralded for all his achievements, which have yet to be matched by anyone, Ortiz, a former UFC light heavyweight champ himself, says that the fighters legacy has been affected.

Tito Ortiz Quotes

And Ortiz continued:

“Jon ‘Bones’ Jones, he had an opportunity to be one of the greatest ever and he’ll never be able to do that again – ever.”

-Tito Ortiz

Of course, Jones has denied any use of PED’s.  On October 10, Jones will appear before the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Not that I’m an MMA blogger, but I’ve seen a lot of these drug testing stories come through the pipes. Here are a few other ones you can check out and read at your own leisure.
